Cosy island life sim

Beyond The Grey

You left the city. Nothing here is in a hurry.

Beyond The Grey key art. A character in white stands at a wooden fence looking out over a bright blue bay, with a red fishing boat moored beside a jetty and a pale hill rising on the right.

Premise

You used to wake up to a screen. Now you wake up to a window.

A grey open-plan office, drained of colour. Two figures stand between rows of desks, monitors and office chairs under a low ceiling.

You had a job in the grey city. It paid, and it took. One morning you stopped, got on a boat, and came here instead.

The island does not ask much of you. There is soil, there are trees, and there is a town further along the path where people are pleased to see you. The rest is yours to decide, and there is no wrong answer.

How it plays

Five things to do with your time here.

01

Grow things and see what happens

Plant wheat and rice in a simple plot, or give a banana tree the room it needs in a bigger one. Buy a sprinkler if you would rather not water everything by hand. Crops grow whether you are watching them or not, so it is fine to wander off.

02

Make what you need

Chop wood, mine stone, carry both to a workbench. An axe and a pickaxe get you started. Crystal shards and forest amber turn those into better ones. Put up fences to mark out your land, add a statue because you like the look of it, drop a chest somewhere so you stop carrying everything you own.

03

Let some things take their time

A beehive fills with honey slowly. An apple press turns a middling harvest into something worth selling. Neither needs you standing over it.

04

Meet the neighbours

Alex, Chloé, John and Kaito live here. They are in different moods on different days, and they will tell you different things depending. Talk to the same person twice and they will surprise you.

05

And then stop

Sit by the fountain at sunset. It has been running longer than anyone remembers. The streetlights come on at dusk, which is an easy way to tell the hour once you have stopped checking. Take the boat to another island when you feel like it. Take the long way home, the shortcuts will still be there tomorrow.

The island at night, lit blue-green. A fenced plot of tilled soil sits among trees and lamp posts, with a lone figure standing at its edge.

Once a week

The market opens

The shopkeepers will buy what you have grown and sell you what you have not got round to making yet. It is the one appointment the island keeps, and it is easy enough to miss if you would rather be somewhere else.

Two characters sit together on a wooden bench in bright daylight, with a streetlamp, flowering beds and low-poly trees behind them.
